Our first ever Blog!

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

Hello my freaky darlings,

I thought I would start a cheeky little blog, so you could find out a little bit more about Gamma-Ray Theatre. Including where we began, what we’ve got coming up and you will also be able to follow our progress every step of the way.

So, where did it all begin? Our co-founders David and myself met nearly three years ago now in a theatre in South London. We had both taken part in a creative writing month called “28 Plays Later”, the premise being that each and every day for the month of February, we would receive a prompt and write a play. Well after all that hard work, it only stood to reason that there would be a get together where some of the plays (one for each daily prompt) would be read out. Both myself and David had a play read at the get together. Something that we are still very proud of.

The moment I knew we would make a heck of a team was 11am on the 26th of March 2017. I had already been craving a cider after a hard week in acting land, and there in the theatre was David with a pint in his hand. I remember that my first words to him were “Where’s the bar?” in a very excited tone! A question which would form a very important part of our relationship.

During the course of the day there had been some riffing on and off around the idea for a play entitled ‘Gamma Thrones’. As well as a great deal of musing about the sad fact that hundreds of plays had been written this month and they did not have a space in which to be shared and performed. It was here that our intrepid co-founders sparked an idea.

What if there was a theatre company which focuses solely on new writing? A company started by writers and actors, a company that is approachable and wants to hear from new writers and actors from all backgrounds? A company that wants nothing more than to reach as many people as possible, and to entertain them.

Well David and myself met up about a month later and came up with that very company. We wanted to tilt Our hats to the people who had given us the idea, and as such Gamma-Ray Theatre was born.

Well, unfortunately the theatre took a little bit of a back seat as we decided to date instead! But two and a half years later, David wrote a play and we needed a company to produce it.

And that is how Gamma-Ray Theatre was born once again.

Stay safe out there my freaky darlings,

Hannah x
